you can swap heads with a 1.6 L VTEC motor, change the computer and run some wires, and call it mini-me but it'll still be a 1.5L motor
PM donesixer for this work, he's got lots of experience doing this type of thing... he may even have some parts for you

ok...
you know the basics of a 4 stroke engine?? intake, compression, combustion, exhust... i think thats how it goes anyways
the cam shaft operates the valves and makes them open and close.... the duration the valve is open and the height it is opened can alter the engines characteristics.... for higher rpm it is advantageous to have higher lift and duration.... but this situation is not good for low rpm.... so basically with vtec is varries the cam shaft between two lobes.... one for low rpm... and above 5500 rpm or so it clicks into the high rpm cam profile....
i dont know if that makes sense but in order to have vtec you need a head from a vtec motor... the d16z6 or d16y8 are i believe the only examples that will fit your motor..... but since you have an 88 the wiring will be a mess to do....
if you want more power look into either getting a zc motor or a complete d16z6 .... they are not expensive and will give you more power and reliability then trying to make your 1.5 have vtec

if money is short and you can't afford a swap then its an ok upgrade... for the money its fairly good.... but you dont win friends driving a 1.5L
