Ghetto Turbo Setup

I was wondering how many people think i could put a full turbo setup together for $1000 for a B18A1?

I was thinking something like this
-AirResearch T3 or junkyard turbo (internal gate)
-Mig welded homemade log manifold
-Stock injectors???
-dunno wut BOV to get
-SMIC or similar junkyard IC
-uberdata tuned
-home depot couplers and clamps
-homemade DP and dumptube

Do you think i could put something together like this for $1000 and what would you recommend for boost? I just wanna start small in the turbo sector before diving into my larger project.

meh unless you can fab stuff up yourself and have a shop stay away from this.

Recommended boost would be whatever the internal wastegate of the turbo is set at.. 6-8psi probably
As for bov, if you're going for cheap but good, get 1g dsm bov. If you're looking for loud/high proformance, get turbo XS RFL or SSQV or greddy typeS.
Uberdata is definately a good choice. But with that your budget might go over $1000. If you use uberdata i'm pretty sure that you'll need a set of new injectors. DSM 450cc works well i believe.
Also, to be on the safe side, you might want to look into a new fuel pump. 255lph walbro's are good.
And since you're running a b18... you don't want to put that thing at risk. So you should play it safe. Go with a better intercooler imo. You might be able to find a nice front mount for cheap on ebay or something.
Also you can't forget gauges, oil lines and fittings and a turbo manifold.

I think thats about it..

im thinking of investing in a welder but i also do have someone with shop and a welder so im not too worried about fabbing up stuff.

yeah i figured the internal would be 6-8 psi which should be a pretty nice bump in power. I will prolly go with a 1G DSM BOV to keep costs down.

As for uberdata i may already have someone with the software and a wideband to do the tuning so thats not a problem. Only thing is ill be running OBD0 because the engine is a B18A1 so im not sure wut program will be best for that.

As for the injectors and fuel pump i wont be upgrading the fuel pump for sure, the injectors i may look at some lude injectors or something bigger than the oem ones. I dont plan on pushing more than 180-200 if i can get there and 450's are good for close to 300whp.

The engine cost me a whole $5 but ill prolly put like $500 ish into it to give it new life so say $505:P.

If i can find a decent sized IC ill do a front mount but if not a side mount should do for a low boost setup.

As for gauges ill get a boost gauge, oil lines are cheap and i mentioned about the manifold above.

if fabbin is not a problem, then it's doable... just not for $1000 bux that's all. $1500 is doable.... $1000 i guess if you can find free or almost free parts.

yeah i was thinking like $1000-1500, somewhere around there. I just wanna get into it on a small scale before i get into the big project. Getting the experience of installing and tuning it should be fun and learning more is always a good thing.

why do it twice tho?? cuz at the end you're gonna replace all the parts anyways, and end up spending $3000 anyways, so why add the initial $1500 to the tab??? Spend the $3000 right off the bat, rather than $4500 in two steps.

the first setup is for my 92 hatch B18A1, the other is gonna be on my 98 Coupe B18B1. Im still going back and forth on that idea though bruno. I could use that money and do the other setup sooner but i wanna see what i can do with a "junkyard" setup aswell.

im too indecisive

your taking a chance with a junkyard turbo. But i definately think that a reliable budget turbo setup can be done with $1500.
You can tune with Chrome since your obd0.

well i was gonna get a rebuilt airresearch T3 off ebay or something like that, the used junkyard parts would be the BOV, SMIC, maybe find some 2-2.5" piping etc.

I'm using a WRX BOV... and if you want I have a sidemount you can get from me for $100. It's off a 2001 Golf 1.8T... about 8.5x11 inches (like the size of a peice of paper... I think it's about 2 inches thick maybe?). On the Golf it mounts on the pass side behind the bumper, in front of the wheel.

Bruno, ill let you know abut the SMIC. Thats exactly how i want to mount it if i get a side mount.

As for the manifold yeah you can get log manifolds $160US but i could get all the parts for under $80 prolly and weld it for free.

Would you really trust that though? I mean the Manifold gets glowing hot. Id personally jsut buy the manifold for the peace of mind. Fabricate up the pipe's and other ****. But buy the manifold, they've come down in price so much its stupid not to.

Can't be done for $1000 and be reliable. You need:

-ARP head studs (thats a first, stock head bolts are junk when boosting) $100
-Eagle talon or Saab blowoff $50
-450cc injectors $100
-why get a junkyard turbo when you can buy a decent T3 off the net for $150 with external wastegate on it.
-turbo manifold???? if you think you have skills go for it. But you can find lots for $300
-Intercooler $200 factory Saab or Volvo (thats on a budget otherwise I wouldn't waste my time on this junk)
-intercooler piping $$100 if you make it up yourself with dynomax U bends or $150 for someone to weld them up.
-oil feed and return lines with flanges and hardware for the block $140
-you need a fuel pump because stock is not going to cut it $120
-adjustable fuel pressure reg $80
-boost guage $50
-ecu that reads postive manifold pressure (what ever you choose just tack it on this list plus laptop if you don't have one already and a wideband to tune it yourself if you don't plan on going to the dyno and using their wideband which is $100+ a hour. So its safe to say you can tack on another $500 in this department
-silicone piping and clamps for intercooler $60
-Getting a flange fabbed up for your downpipe $50 to $60
-Dynomax U bend for fabbing the downpipe $30
-$80 for flexpipe after the downpipe or your going to have alot of exhaust issues with cracking downpipes or manifolds, there must be flex here because of the torque.

That is a basic junkyard fabbed up kit done by yourself aside from building the manifold and downpipe flange. If you choose to build your own manifold, chalk on another $250 because you have to buy a good welder then the hardware to make the manifold, so its more expensive to build one if you don't already have a welder. So your at $1690 for a **** turbokit plus you have to add whatever ecu you choose on to it (which was another $500). But just remember, when you go cheap, you go twice. Save your cheddar and do it right the first time without the ooops.

Those seem like some expensive prices man, plus i dont think some of that stuff is necessary.

-ARP head studs (stock would be fine IMO, but i prolly will use head studs cause the encine is already disassembled so i need to get new oem bolts or head studs)
-Eagle talon or Saab blowoff $50
-450cc injectors $100 (where can u get em for $100 and woudlnt prelude injectors be fine for under 200whp?)
-why get a junkyard turbo when you can buy a decent T3 off the net for $150 with external wastegate on it. (i am planning on getting a rebuilt T3 off ebay with internal wastefate)
-turbo manifold???? if you think you have skills go for it. But you can find lots for $300 (turbo manifold should be under $100 if i buy the stuff and get it welded)
-Intercooler $50-100 for a DSM sidemount
-intercooler piping $$100
-oil feed and return lines with flanges and hardware for the block $70US
-I dont think a fuel pump is necessary, stock should be fine for what im looking to do
-adjustable fuel pressure definitely not
-boost guage $50
-ecu ($50 for socketing)
-silicone piping and clamps for intercooler $60
-Dynomax U bend for fabbing the downpipe $30
-$80 for flexpipe after the downpipe or your going to have alot of exhaust issues with cracking downpipes or manifolds, there must be flex here because of the torque.

thats $1020, i figure with like 1-2 hours of dyno tuning (with a good hookup) i should be way under $1500.
