how do we know?
i got a few qestions in this thread
1) how do we know how much life left in the clutch? what should i look for to know if the clutch is still good or needs replacement?
2) how do we know if the tranny grinds? i heard it is when we have trouble getting in gear all the time, then we have grind in that gear... not sure if i was confuse by the stuff i read around posts....
3) not sure if synchro are related to the idea of grind or not... but what happens when there are synchro problem of different gears?
your knowledge is welcome!
thanks for the help!

1) depends, where the clutch engages off the floor, well that works for my cable clutch, you can start rolling your car then quickly go to a higher gear, then rev up and see if the clutch slips
2)if the tranny grinds, you will actually hear the gears mashing if you speed shift, this can be related back to a bad clutch again that isnt fully disengaging.
3)a synchro is related to a grind with high rpm shifting, they slow the gear down, so when you shift the gear isnt already turning

^^ he's mostly right.
1. on a Honda it's hard to tell, but stock honda clutches should last forever if the person knows how to drive, cuz the engine makes little torque, therefore it's easy on the clutch. on high torque cars, you'd test it by putting it in high gear and flooring it... if the clutch is bad, it'll slip. Problem is, the clutch slipping is already a good indicator it will fail VERY soon. Most clutches keep their hold to the day they die.
2. problems getting into gear could be shift forks too! grinding is ... grinding - you just hear it and cringe.
3. synchros is griding noise while shifting fast at high RPM.

I think B is right. I can't go through quick shifts at hi revs with out hearing some gears grinding(so is that my synchro's?), but other than that, my clutch is still really good.
What I do to test clutch strength is roll the car from 2nd gear. If you can do it from 3rd gear, I think the clutch is still good. Mine can perform in 2nd pretty well.
oh, 260,000km on original clutch so yes, a clutch can last forever. In my case though, I'm gonna have to change it soon cuz I'm teaching the wife. hahah.

hahaha..........
so if the car still rolls while i'm on clutch and in high gears, then the clutch is still good?
and... when you say "slip", do you mean you'll feel something going, but the car is not going???
last thing, does the mashing-sound sound like a click?
