Just a few moments ago a friend and I took off my left front wheel to find the source of a grinding noise.. To our surprise I had totally lost a brake pad.. Totally gone the caliper was left grinding down the roter.. Has anyone ever had this happen, is it normal on hondas to lose the outer brake pad?? How bad will this damage my caliper?? Any and all responses will be helpful, thanks!!

lol umm i think the only way to loose a brake pad is for it to not have been installed really? unless it wore down so far that it just cracked and fell off... weirdness either way

Never heard of it happening .... maybe your caliper bracket that holds them in place is fubarred

 

Uhh no last time I had it checked they said they were ok.. Umm now their is nothing.. But a shaved roter.. This is NO joke.. The pad is just gone.. It's just a little weird.. Can it actually fall out or is it clamped in their?

 

the stuff your talking about is like a square peg coming out of a round hole, sounds like a mystery to me

is the backing plate still there or is that gone too?

 

I'll try to snap some pics tomorrow.. Looks pretty bad though.. And this square peg came out of a round hole because it's gone.. Backing plate and all.. Nothing left.. Just Caliper to Roter... Nasty lookin..

or someones playing some kind of mean joke and stole it LOL. This is just too weird, i dont think any of us have had experience with teh same problem

 

i hope you mean the pad material is gone, and your rotor is shaved due to the bare backing plate rubbing on it.. i would believe that as it happened to my dad a few years ago.. the pad abrasive material cracked and fell out, and left only the backing plate rubbing on the rotor..

because there is absolutely no way for the pad, or at least the backing plate to fall out unless the caliper cracks into pieces

 

I think it could be some kind of mean joke, but now I took the wheel off and their is no pad, no backing plate.. Nothing at all, the roter is scraping against the caliper. I will take some pictures of it today if I get a chance. But I sware to god this is no joke it is just gone. The last people to touch that part of the car was Canadian Tire and all they were doing was a tire rotation. I just can't figure it out. Never in my life time have I ever seen anything like that or even herd about that. I've herd of pads being lost, but the backing plate to. That's just nuts.

 

dude the closest thing i have ever heard of is someone putting ****ty second line pads on a car and under braking the rivets gave way and the pad friction lingin crumpled and fell out while drivning, but i have NEVER heard of a entire PAD disappearign!

its definitely improper installation or someone took it off, did you or a buddy do it?? are you going to a certified and honest auto shop??? did you mess with anyone???

this is like the weirdest but most surprising thing

 

you know something... the instant the pad "fell out" the pedal would sink to the floor. you would KNOW when you lost a pad. besides there being no physical way for the pad to just fall out...

I suspect possibly that the pad was never installed to begin with, but even then you'd definitely KNOW something was wrong with your brakes the instant you hit the pedal.

 

Alright, The last people to go near the brakes was Canadian Tire, people give them a bad rap but they are pretty good. Anyway, yeah I noticed when I stepped on the brake and their was a violent snapping noise and the car shook and the peddle sank to the floor. I have it in the shop now, as it turns out the pad is totally gone and it forced the calliper cylider right out and shot brake fuild everywhere, Looking at close to 600 to repair..

 

well what if the pad was dropped and cracked before instalation and a backing plate was never installed. i dunno i still can't even picture that. we should start a hall of shame forum for wiered chit like this

No one has seen this before?? I have been full time licenced tech on cars for three years only now and I have seen it a handfull of times, the brake pad gets so worn or the pad material falls off the steel part (from overheating or cracking) then the steel part falls through the caliper, never seen it on a honda but on domestics. Weird yes, uncommon yes, unheardof no. Just replace the pads, rotors and check to see if the caliper is too worn out replace if need be if its too worn, the caliper will apply pressure unevenly
