I think its a pretty simple decision. I will NEVER again buy a JDM engine from an importer or salvage yard. Sure they look clean when you pick them up, but how hard is it to clean an engine that sittin on the ground not running? You can pretty much bet that you are going to have to spend some money to get that engine, which nobody knows how long its been sitting for, running in top shape. I know i did, water pump and timing belt, thermoswitch, evap purge solenoid, clutch, pressure plate machining (not just resurfacing but balancing), dizzy, these were all things that needed to be replaced shortly and i mean shortly after i did the swap.
So true. Half these engines have way more then 45k on them. I would rather start from scratch and know that the history starts with me and not some chump trying to sell me a motor that they have no clue of its real history. I built my LS/VTEC/TURBO from scratch through Martin at NASH and its the cats ***. Buying GSR motor is nice if N/A is your goal. If its turbo that motor will cost you over $8000 once forged pistons and rods get in it on top of the price you paid for the engine in the first place. LS is always a no brainer when going forced induction because you can pick up a tired motor for $100, then rebuild it for strength and reliability and the money people are crying over would pay for itself 2 times over. Vtec heads are a dime a dozen now a days so going LS/VTEC makes more sense in a turbo application. Remember cast pistons and stock rods can only take so much, forged pistons and rods are not bullet proof but theres more room for error when tunning and hp output is by far higher when you have the ability to turn up the boost.

All parts are new and OEM Honda unless otherwise stated. Engine has been tested for compression, leak down, and oil pressure on our test stand to ensure that the engine you receive is in good running condition. The timing belt will be replaced and the oil pan removed to inspect the bottom end. Your clutch will also be replaced.Your engine bay and exterior of your car will also be detailed before the car leaves the shop.
And you also get a "hand release" from Steve too...all in all good service

So how much does a swap cost at your shop? $5000 for a b16?
Doing all what you mentioned is an excellent idea, but isn't it time consuming, and seeing as the customer pays for the labour wouldn't it be expensive? I also would recommend changing the timing belt and water pump while the engine is out of the car.

And what exactly is a hand release? Sounds dirty to me.
