hey Greg,
you dont need flat lugnuts, you need the ones with a groove in them for the plastic washers to sit in above the tapered end of the nut...thats why the plastic washers are split... kinda hard to explain...

Whatever.....do what you want.
IMO, cleaning, then painting with Tremclad rust paint, looks far better than plastic hubcaps. Did it to mine, and they've held up for the last year. The rims on my Civic winter beater, were those silver American racing jobs with the plastic center caps(one anyway). They were all corroded to S#*t. I cleaned 'em, painted them with low gloss engine enamel and they look almost too good for winter beater tires. At a glance, they could pass for Rotas......LOL
