New and considering a b16a1

Hello.

I'm considering a b16a1 swap b/c I'm tired of my slow *** Celica.

I have a place in windsor that can do it for 3500 but I need a body and they seem hard to come by. So I'm considering buying a running Civic and swaping it in.

If anyone knows of ANY Hatch of Coupe 92-95 Civic's please let me know.

Also any links to info on swaping of b16a1's would be most helpful.

Anyways, nice site you have here, and maybe once I get my Civic with the b16a1 I should come up there and see some of your cars.

P.S - I know the b16 has 160 HP, but I was wondering what kinda cars this engine can take on. I'm assumeing stock they can go up against things like RS Camero's, v6 Stangs, auto 5.0Ls, Grand Am gt's.. am I right?

Buy snatchbacks car, you'll have the fastest car for $10K... U from windsor?? Poor poor child j/k

Buying a non-running Civic shell is the worse idea EVER... you'll end up dumping so much cash into it you'll **** your pants.... buy a running car.

Thats a pretty good hardcore performance car, but If I'm gonna spend 10gs then I'd like a little show and go.

10Gs is **** when you work part-time and go to school and your only 18....

When I'm done school don't you worry, I'll have some money to spend on a car and it will be a lot more then 10Gs.

snatchback prolly spent in excess of 30K on his car... $10K really ain't **** when you think about it in terms of parts and labour that is in that car. You are buying it for $0.30 on the dollar, which is a sweet deal! Borrow now, pay later

just an idea?

buy snatchbacks car...sell the itr engine, "i don't agree with this totally", (i'm sure there's some people on this site that would want it) and then swap in the b16
you'll come out with a roughly $7000, maybe cheaper, b16'd civic w/ nice paint job, cat back exhaust, and some other goodies!

i personally don't promote the whole buying a shell idea
but i guess in the end it's your money

If someone else was doing the swop why is a shell a bad thing?

What's the difference If i bring them a Civic with a motor that runs, or a Civic with a motor that doesn't?

Either way the engine in the car is coming out whether it works or not.

ok here man how much money do you have to spend in the first place..and you will ahve to get the car certified whcih means in most cases windsheild brakes odds and ends which will add up ...plus everythign else liek bad suspension components...blah blah is sounds good but she adds up quick...plus a runnign 92-95 hatch without rust will be a nice little penny to begin...HOW much $$$do you have then I'll give you a REAL opinion...whcih coudl possibly be zc 4th gen....

I know how much money I have and what I want to spend.

I'm jsut trying to figure out how much this stuff usally costs you guys.

It looks like I'm getting ripped off here in town for being charged 3500 to install a b16a1 with no warrenty.
Someone in the classifieds is selling a b16a1 for 1600 with everything plus shipping with 6 month warrenty

Another question I now have is usally how many hours would it take for a mechanic to install a b16a1 into a 5th gen.
Or even more specific, how much should I actually be paying for just the install? I know they have to figure stuff out with the mounts and what not.

A knowlegable mechanic can do the swap in his sleep.....will know all the "little" things that have to be done that alot of people over look.....and can have it done in under 8 hours. (I've seen it done in around 4 hours). Most will do it over 2-3 days.

Ask around to see what other shops charge, and ASK if you can see some of the cars they have already done. If they start to give you excusses.....look for another shop.

As for warrenty, they have to give you a 90 warranty if you have a bill that shows you paid the taxes....ie....has to have the registred GST # on the bill.

Thanks!
So bascially it shoulden't be anymore then 480 bucks to install. (I'm assumeing a $60/hr rate)

I know there are issues with the moutning, so do you know if anywhere sells mounts that have been pre-fab'd so you can swop the engine directly in? Kinda like a kit? This maybe make the work for the mechanic even easier.

Is it a law that they have to give you a 90-day warrenty?
B/c my friend just got an SVT engine put into his Contour and they gave him a 90-day.

There is a b16a1 I'm looking at and the guy is from B.C and he says it comes with a 6month warrenty and it's only 1600 for EVERYTHING plus approx. $250 to ship to Ontario. So even if it takes them 8 hours and costs me $480 then a non-optomistic price is 2500, it could even easily be lower then that.

You're forgetting misc. parts.
Does the engine include tranny? Mounts? ECU?
Don't forget you have to do some re-wiring and as with any swap you should do the proper maintance before the engine goes in. (Si and VX models help on reducing the amount of wiring I believe)

IF you're taking it to a place that does Honda swaps then 8hrs is realistic, otherwise its gonna be more.
I believe Hasport makes mounts kit. A b16 swap is NOT a direct swap. You have to weld in new mounts and install the tranny (which I think needs new axles)

Don't forget taxes too!

I talked to a mechanic friend of mine awhile back. He told me that the goverment has a law (don't ask me where it's written....I didn't ask), that protects the buyer against shoddy workmanship. This minimum time is 90 days for labour and parts.....unless you sign something that says otherwise.

Haven't you notice that whatever you buy anything (except food and some other stuff), that it automatically comes with a 90 day parts and labour warranty?

Remembr, if you sign something that says "as is" or something other that the 90 day thing....even if it's more that the 90 days, then the seller by law, has to honour that contract......but ALWAYS read the fine print.
