bb, about the strut/damper thing, a strut doesn't have to be part of the steering system (although it happens to be that way on the 7th gen Civics). It's possible to have rear struts...
A strut is a damper that has the bottom "cup" for the coil spring to attach to.
A damper is just the damper with the spring being mounted somewhere else on the car's suspension.
Also, damper = shock absorber (which we usually just use the word "shock").
