opinions, ideas, suggestions are all welcome (gas mileage issue)

My car is consuming what I believe is large amount of gas. Gas mileage is really important to me; I have done ALL maintenance according to schedule and have seen no difference. My car does about 400-450km/tank, to put this in perspective my other car, “The Boat” (1988 Delta 88 6-cylinder) under the same conditions got about the same if not better. Factory specs for 98 si are closer to the 600km mark. What gives?

I’m willing to through a little more money at my car as long as it’s not going to be in vane (I’m also willing just get rid of this car as well). Is ther some where I can bring my car to get through and accurate analysis of what’s going on. I’m sick taking my cars to people who say things such as“I think the problem is…” or “it could be…after having just handed over $80 bucks for the hour charge and still not positive exactly what should be replaced next. I’m fairly handy and like to do my own work and you know I can speculate too what’s going on but before I through any more money I want to see the numbers that prove exactly what it is. I’m just being to picky or unrealistic?

P.S. another thing I hate hearing is “your car is getting old it will never run like it used to” my car has 180,000km and I know lots of other cars out there that are older, bigger, smaller, Honda and not Honda that get better gas mileage then this.

Thanks!!

in the winter, you're lucky to be even getting that kinda mileage. even in the summer, that's great mileage for city driving.

highway, 550-600 kms per tank is a-ok.

remember, the Delta 88 tank is prolly roughly 50% bigger capacity too. isht, my 88 E250 van with a 351W engine has TWIN 70 liter tanks. That's 140 liters of fuel brah!! lol

anyways, you do NOT HAVE a problem.

I feel ya on that.. I have an '88 and I used to run over 400km to a tank.. Now I'm lucky if I make over 300km. Which is odd because I thought mileage is better under highway driving which I do alot of.. I've tried injector cleaners, flushes, different gas stations.. Different Octanes.. Nothing seems to be helping..

IMO granny shifting is the key to max fuel economy, never let it rev above 3g's.

well I'd say your mileage is fine, but check for leaks and or poor running condition (runnign rich), best bet to insure good mileage is a good full tune up cap rotor plugs gapped correctly oil change injector cleaner and some good old mopar CCC threw the vacuum line then down each park plug hole let sit for a few hours then crank it out and put new plugs in. That stuff will clean your valves and pistons as good as your gonna be able to without ripping it apart.

Well sounds like I should be looking at anew car if I’m that concerned with mileage.

Kind of funny though that none of our cars are even close to the department of energy’s guidelines (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/)

I got a 96 with similar mileage and i got over 600 ONCE when i was driving on 80km/h hwy's to and fom work for 2 hours a day. In city / highway with granny shifting i get 400 - 450.

I'm with Brett on the 3 000 rpm rule. Keep it under than for a tank and compare mileage.

that's what I'm thinking.... 45 liter tank in a Delta 88 is unthinkable. You'd have to fill up every 2 days!

I had a Crown Vic (about the same size car), mine was a 5.0L and that thing used to run $10/hour on the highway

OK anyways, if you are so concerned about mileage, go get a Prius or Insight or Echo hatch.

EPA gov't testing is done in average weather... NOT frigging middle of winter. Besides that, you prolly idle the car a lot more. I know I idle my car at least an extra hour, maybe 1.5 hrs every week... that translates into another 100 kms of highway driving.

Now that I think about I was always filling up with 45L which always came to a cool even $40 (back when gas was cheaper). So with the needle sitting on empty and me putting in 45L there would have been between 50-55L

As far as this being a new problem brought on by the cold weather it isn’t, although it has gotten a little worse.

regardless, 450 kms on a tank of Toronto driving is just fine for mileage.

i agree with b16civic! my cat had the internals all fukt from heating up to much with my old engine... when i swaped it out for a new converter i get WAY better fuel economy like 4 or 5 mpg

its underneath the car, if your gonna take it off you might aswell change it. I say leave it, if the cat is bad enough you'll have a CEL and really really bad mileage

how big is a 92 hatch gas tank?
i never drive until the gas tank light comes on, i just drive it to the point where the gas needle is pointing in the red area on the cluster... when i go gas up my car... the max i can put in is like 34.x Litres???

is my gas tank 40L, 45L ??? 35L??? not sure...
well suppose if my tank is just 40L or 35L.... driving 450KM with granny shifting (i shift at about 2800-3000rpm)... i only put in 89 gas... so i say a full tank is about $30 (.80 x 40L)

$30-$35 for 400-450KM of winter driving is indeed good numbers!!

i have like 450-550KM in the summer time (usually approx 550 with granny shift, and sometimes 450 when i go mad -- doesn't mean i kick vtec like crazy tho haha)... well..... with all the car warming of like 15-30 mins to just get ur car unfrozen... i think civic gives the best mileage already...

my friend drives a camry... 60L of tank size... he uses 87 gas since its a leased car... he still need to pay like $45-$50 of gas for a full tank... and he can only get like approx 500-550 (in the summer time) but its an automatic and non-v6 car.... well he doesn't warm car much in the winter... he gets like 450-500 in the winter...

unless there's something i don't know about the civic gas tank... otherwise, i think civics are still in the advantage of $10-$15 of gas per tank compare to nowadays car with 60L tank and can just go as much as 500-600KM.....
