proper way to cut springs?
Whats the proper way to calculate the spring rates and cut them. I have i believe eibach or H&R springs on my eg hatch and the front sits perfect but the rear is really high. I have a set of front and rear EK springs that i can cut up and throw into the hatch but i dont wanna have an really bouncy or messed up ride.
Whats the proper way to cut springs and calculate the final spring rates.

well if you take your time to calculate the spring rates after u cut them and get them measured after you cut them then u can do them "properly" .
This is what ive heard but not sure how to go about it.
I have spare springs and i dont wanna buy new springs or coils so i figure i can use what i have.
and yes matt im expecting alot of flaming but thats ok because it just proves that 99% of the people on this board arent willing to experiment.

The car has koni reds BTW, so im not trying to drop the car on stock shocks.
How could i drop the spring perch or drop the fork mount? Would I need to drill a new hole through the forks higher than the stock location.
Reading that thing matt if i cut up the rear EK springs its a 1:1 ratio as far as the height. Now figuring out the spring rates so its not too stiff is where im gonna have some problems.
Would i be better off throwing the stock EK front springs into the rear of the eg and see how that sits and then i can cut them from there ?

i cut my nuespeed race spring a while back just as something to do... they came out alright... never actually put them to use though... i just cut 2 coils off the soft side so they'd fit nicely within the coilover sleeves... i might put them on the sedan if i get motivated sometime just to see...
i'm unsure how it'll ride or anything but due to the spring rates it should be reasonable... i'll post up here whenever or if ever i install them

i ahve some buddies who take really cheap sleve type coilovers, take the springs out of them, cut their stock springs, and put them into the coilover...... they say they work great, but im skeptical

Steve I wish i could say i was a hot rodder lol. Im just looking for other ways to modify whats suppose to be my "beater" without spending the type of money ive spent on my Coupe.
looking at both my oem springs the top is not flat like the bottom is so i dont see there being a problem wearing down the mount up top. i will grind it down to keep it flat though if for some reason it doesnt settle right.
Now which spring has the higher spring rate, the rear spring uses thicker coil and has more coils and is taller whereas the fron spring uses less coils, thinner material and is slightly shorter?

So I would be better off cutting the rear oem springs right bruno because of the lower spring rate?
I was thinking take a day and take out the shock and springs and remove the spring. Then install the EK rear springs and reinstall the shock/spring into the car. Then measure the distance from the wheel arch to the top of the tire and cut that much off? Or maybe i should add 0.5" and go for the slammed look:P

yup, its called personalizing your car without spending money on new products.
What do you think would be the best way to go about this steve? Install and then cut em or cut them and install and if there not right oh well?
