A recent thread discussed appropriate choices of oil grades for winter driving. Much of the thread focussed on 5W30 as being prefered over 10W30 for winter. This doesn't seem to represent a big leap for most folks.

I've observed, however, that a lot of folks shy away from, or don't even consider a 0W30. Any thoughts or comments on why this is the case? How do you feel about 0W30?

i wouldt run a 0w30 way to thin, i dont like the idea o that

 

For startup purposes on -20 or below....WOW what a difference it makes..


but again, i tend to hit a few empty parking lots and drift around a bit, only time of year we can :P

once i overheated, and just imagine that was your motor oil at the time!!!!......

 

you seem to be the oil guy cam, so maybe you should write a post on oil weights and i can sticky it so people will stop asking the same question over and over and over. adress the weight question and the seasonal question plus anything else that will be of value to the members. thanks

hah we use 0w20 motul in our race car ..
we have to change it every session ..
which is aobut 40 mins ..

Ive had good luck wiht 0w30 over the years. In our gta climate, 5w30 is fine, but in colder places or the rare winter when we get sub -30 temps 0w30 is a great choice.

First off its not way to thin, its the same viscosity and weight when it is at operating tempurature.

 

Engine oil viscosity is important and measured only at normal operating temperature, which is about 210 degrees F. (The "30" part of its viscosity.)

All oil, when cooler than this, will thicken up. The 5W doesn't thicken up as fast as a 10W does, so at room temperature the 5W will be a little thinner than the 10W. This means, for the owner, that the engine will turn over easier in cold weather, with 5W than it will with 10W oil.

Just go with the rating and specs that is recommended (the larger number) for your vehicle, and select the lower number based on the climate conditions in your area. For up to 20 below F, 10W will work; up to 30 below F, 5W will work; for greater than 30 below F, you'll want 0W. But remember, that at say zero degrees F, even though a 10W can handle the job, the 5W or 0W will give you easier cold start performance, requiring less cranking, helping conserve your battery; and will flow to your moving parts more quickly.

I agree with 1sloweg (there's a surprise, eh?). A 0W30 may be a bit of overkill for our climate in southern Ontario, but I like the extra insurance.

How's that? A 30 weight is a 30 weight. Whether 0W, 5W, or 10W, they're all the same thickness at operating temperature... just different when they are colder.

I don't generally run 0-30 in our cars unless people ask for it. I'm worried about burning oil on warm up. Many of my customers young or old, do not allow sufficient time for the vehicles to warm up before seeing WOT. So to be safe I just stick with a 5 or 10. But I do like the idea of quick lubrication.

 

Interesting concern. I'd like to run that one by our Technical Services folks to see what they say.

About the girl. Well frankly, I've been waiting for a comment from the forum. Just suprised it took this long. I even thought of a separate posting to give her a 1-10 rating.

Since there are a lot of great photographers on the forum, how about submitting some photos I could use? Sexy, tasteful, classy is all good, but **** is not, and bikinis and nudity aren't essential to a top quality photo. Oh, and also, the car in the pick has to have at least a 20" Amsoil Decal prominently visible in the photo. Any takers?

Could you give a little bit more detail on this subject? Just curious what would you specify as a good warm up time? For summer or for winter? are you saying to let it idle a while or just drive it real easy till it is up to temp?

Im just curious because sometimes i notice i can see smoke from my exause when i first start up but after the engines warmed up it is not there.
