Let's get serious.............seriously which way should I go???
I've been thinking of power but don't know which way to go. It's between a Supercharger or a Turbo. I've been hearing good things about both but need more points to lead me to the right power. No!!! I don't want NOS.
Right now I'm leaning towards a Turbo.
Let's see what TCC members say about power.

Before you get lambasted with ......
do this no do that ......
If you use the search tab and search for either turbo or supercharger you will get a long list of yes's and knows ... and also a lot of info ....
I have a feeling Bbarbulo may hop in here .......
If i was you I would send a Pm to bbarbulo or talk to b16civic they will have some good info for you ......

Oh, maybe I should expand on that...
It really depends on what you would like to see from your Civic... outright speed, or just nice streetable cruizing/passing power. Note that one works off engine speed (and is as such limited by that), whereas the other works off exhaust volume, and is theoretically unlimited in potential. Either way, you are looking at boost, which will require some prep on your car/engine. If you are looking to run 7-10 psi, then new injectors, pump and some sort of fuel control are in order. You can use stock injectors and just keep them open longer or use a FPR, but that's a sketchy way of doing it. Personally, I prefer my boost to come out of a snail driven by exhaust gas, but everyone has their pref, which is what this debate really is... preference. Turbochargers are generally more accepted by the import world, and are as such more supported by the aftermarket. This would be my choice... go with what the pros use. Personally, I have a LX motor D16Y7, and have put together my own turbo out of only the best parts. It didn't make sense to me to spend $5K on a turbo that I would just have to upgrade later anyways. This way, I went out and hand picked all the finest parts and put together a kit that will make more USEFUL power, be more reliable, and last longer, while being slightly cheaper than some other low boost kit. Now, by useful power, I mean it's not gonna break records for D-series performance since traction is limited to begin with (FWD), but it will have more low end torque than an H22A by about 3500 rpm, and will still put down 200hp to the wheels. Now, it hasn't been installed yet, since I'm still missing little bits like oil fittings, coolant fittings, down pipe, and cat back... and then clutch, flywheel and Quaife, but everything else I've already purchased.

Very interesting!!!!
If I were to choose any of the power makers I wouldn't go cheap. I would of course upgrade and change everything necessary for strong, reliable power that would last a long time, hopefully a life time.

haha... gatherer, I hope to have it in use for a life time. As far as longevity and design... and cost, I figured that the best way to make this a reality was to use as many OEM parts as possible, and use the finest of the aftermarket parts available. It's no secret really, small engine likes a small turbo, stock internals don't like too much boost... and I wanted almost brand new OEM parts... so the choice was natural... what's the latest turbo OEM car that came out??? THE WRX!! At 2 liters stock and 14.5 psi of boost, it was the perfect donor. Being a heavily modded car, it was easy to find a turbo with 5000 miles on it, basically in brand new shape. And being OEM, it's guaranteed to last, esp on a smaller engine that it was spec'd out for... running lower boost than it was spec'd for. Combined with a WRX BOV, Turbo XS HPMBC, Apexi S-AFC, Venom 440cc injectors, Holley 255lph FI pump, 1.8T Golf intercooler, this one is a sure winner. Use the Golden Eagle oil sandwich plate for filtered oil supply, a home made stainless steel manifold, a 3" downpipe... and it's good as gold. Then, maybe I need a 3" Catco cat, and then size it down to 2.5" catback or maybe I'll do a 3" custom exhaust all the way, that I haven't decided. Once my stock clutch fries, ACT Stage II with ACT flywheel and Quaife, Z10 radius rods (or Leitner's equivalent) to lay down to power to the pavement, and I have a mid-high 13 sec car

Oh yeah, and once I feel safe enough to crank the boost, I'll ask Leitner to put forged rods in or maybe the LS rods, get a thicker head gasket, change the MAP sensor to a 3 bar unit, and if I'm feeling perticularly rich, a standalone ECU (else an MSD boost dependent ignition box)... and I'll be smiling my way into 12 second quarter times with a full interior and a SOHC non VTEC under the hood, and boost set at about 15 psi. But I don't drag the car or anything and I don't need that kind of speed, I just like tinkering and I like to pull hard out of corners.

As for you gatherer, if you are doing Solo 1 and 2, a turbo will not be to your advantage at all... I've seen a turbo B16A do the cone dance, and it was absolutely ridiculous. A sick-as-hell BMW kicked his *** outright, and a Lotus Elise also kicked ***... and a Impreza 2.5RS (older body style) that was heavily modded beat him too. A better choice for you would be the B18B cuz it's cheap and has lots of torque for those quick transitions through the turns. However, a swap or F/I in Solo 1 puts you in a category with some insane cars, so if you really want that I recommend you build yourself a 2nd gen RX7, or better yet buy a retired race car, seam weld the chassis, freshen up the engine and brakes, and go have some fun.

No, only a few ppl actually have boost around here, and they don't post much at all... if you wanna chop it up with some boost techies, honda-tech and dseries are the places to visit. There really isn't much there that I could learn from or that interests me. At this point my stuff is pretty basic, and I'm not getting very much into it yet. When I have to re-shim my tranny, then I may turn to Mista Bone for help, but until then... TCC it is

Nova_Dust, my car has been in my filthy little hands since brand new... I was seventeen when I bought it. It's been maintained and taken care of like none other. Never raced, never beat, never missed a scheduled maintenance. I miss every pot hole I can, stop for every rail road track, I stop for every driveway and speedbump (I even bought a second car as a daily driver cuz I thought the ride to and from work was too short to justify starting the Civic in the morning) ... run synthetic oil and all OEM replacement parts right down to the coolant and even air filters (previously). With a 106K all highway kms (went to Waterloo for school, so 700kms highway every week for 2.5 years) this car is still like brand new. Though it's pretty heavily modified, all the mods have always been the finest sensible parts (nothing like Spoon or Comptech, but I never put on an APC/Weapon R part on my car). Basically, throwing out the D16Y7 that I cared for to this extent would just be silly. So, I decided that since I treated it so well, it would be good to continue running this engine under boost and continue to maintain it the way I have, and it will last forever like a Honda engine should. Besides that, I suppose the thought of a B18C with boost just sounds prohibitively expensive. I mean, imagine having to replace the distributor or something... it makes no sense under boost. If I did get a B series, I'd get a USDM B18C5, and leave it totally stock...
sugarcane, that's a nice setup... the MSD box you are looking at is like a 6BD or something... it's about $500 USD If your car is OBDI, then Hondata is good, else look into E-manage. Mine is OBDII so Hondata is out of the question, and a stand alone makes no sense to me right now cuz I wouldn't know what to do with it I'm gonna wrench on some friends cars and my other cars first before I do the stand alone thing.

Hondata has OBDI P28 ECUs modified with OBDII connectors. These plug straight into an OBDII vehicle with no adapter harness necessary. Available with OBDII A (96-97) and OBDII B (98-00) connectors.

its still a toss up between going with the AFC hack or Hondata.
I know someone that has the stage 4....so most likely i'll go with the hondata.
My buddy was planning on going boost till he met the love of his life........so i'mma grab his MSD system (hopefully its the 6BD but i doubt it) MSD dizzy and wires. FPR and guage.
