The cost of snow tires will far outweigh that of one slide into a curb.
Snow tires are a must IMO, especially with the light cars that we all drive.
I am partial to Michelin, and love the Pilot Alpin 2's i ran last year.
I think Hakka 1's and the super aggressive Blizzak models are overkill for GTA driving IMHO.

Nordic doesn't make them in the size I need (16"). The Michelin's were about the same price anyway.

Mugen C: I put over 17,000 km on the car with those tires on. And with the 401 being in the shape it was, the damage to the soft compound was tremendous.

I could very well spend some money on winter tires this coming winter. I have never used any and got into an accident early this year.

The reason I buy snow tires:

My gf lives in Hamilton and I go there ALOT. So, in the winter with me car barely off the ground in piles of snow, I go up the mountain access and watch 3.2TL's and Accords and SUV's with ****ty tires just sit there with their front ends going side to side while I chug along with the snow dragging under me straight up the hill

Don't forget the FUN you could have in the Mohawh College Parking lot...

How about the stiff hill @Mohawk road & Upper Paradise!
I lived there for over 7yrs...always drifting (well.. forced to!). with my good old 4th Gen!

If you leave your car lowered they're pretty useless without a camber kit though. I noticed how bad it was for me with my -2.5 degree camber since the tires weren't sitting properly. I still never got stuck though. Just slid more then when it wasn't lowered the year before.

because those 2-3 snow storms can happen while your leaving work and kill you. I'd rather pay $300 for icetracs and keep my summer rubber for the summer.

it's like this... as long as you're aware of what to expect of your tires, anything that can hold air is fine.

I'm personally all about good tires for the conditions, but last year I ran my 6 year old stock Civic Firestones on my winter beater, and I got stuck nearly every day. I never even came close to an accident cuz I knew what I was driving on was dangerous and stupid, but I'd park the car, there would be a light dusting of snow after work, and I wouldn't be able to move out of my parking spot This year, I got new Bridgestone Weatherforce tires for winter. Being all seasons I expect excellent wear qualities with great winter grip. Esp in Windsor, there is nearly never any snow. Couple winters ago, my 1st Saturn did great on all season Motomasters, getting stuck only once when the snow was up to the floorboards (not plowed at all), and even then I made it nearly 1/2 a block before all the snow I was pushing lifted the car off the ground... so it wasn't the tires that let go! So you can use GOOD all season tires and get both good traction and good wear properties. But if you expect to encounter black ice or other savage conditions, it's best to go with Nokian tires.

i usually run all seasons and do fine. As long as people understand that whatever tires you run on, YOU MUST SLOW DOWN AND BE CAREFUL when drivin in the winter, everyone will be fine.

my icetracs cost me about 400 for all 4 and they were 14"

good investment for the season and they got me out of some sticky spots... like my driveway when i was late for school and i didnt have time to shovel
