Audio newbie needs your help!

Hi, i got a lot of valuable help from the ppl on this board when i had a query bout my engine so i'm hoping i can generate the same response here.
I have a 1988 civic hatchback std .. i want to get a system in it .. but i don't want to get something like you see all the kids with .. nothing but bass pumping through.. i want something that will provide me with a clear crisp quality sound .. with the occasional bass if and when i need it . i don't know a lot about car audio in terms of what speakers or size or what box.
from whatever i've been told .. the sound quality matters more depending on the way you install the system as well as the type of box you have.. if i'm wrong please correct me. So i need someone's help in telling me exactly what to get .. in terms of ..
Deck - .. what shoudl i look for in it .
Speakers in the Door - ( since my car didn't come with any )
Sub -
Amp -

obviously i'm not lookin to shell out wads of cash for this... and ANY help at all would be greatly appreciated.

thnx

-Philly

Deck - Are you looking for something that is gonna impress people or something that wont draw alot of attention and have amazing sound?

Speakers in door - I would suggest getting a nice 6.5" & 1" tweet component set. You can either put them in your doors or get some fiberglass pods built that would go on the floor of your footwells.

Sub - Something like 1 nice 12 would be good in a sealed enclosure would probably suit your needs.

Amps - Something thats of decent quality with a good dampening factor, low THD and thats not Lanzat or Pyle etc.

If you give me a price range for this stuff I could come up with a list for you.

ok

Deck - i'm not really lookin to impress but i wouldn't mind spending a little more on the deck .. because i can take it with me on a next vehicle. i'm looking for one with cd and radio .. although mp3 would be an added bonus.. and i couldn't care less for the look

Speakers - i'm definately going to go with what u suggested .. 2 6.5" and 2 1" tweeters on the door...

Sub - once again i will go with what u suggested .. the 1 12"... i can always upgrade that later on right ? if its needed.. which i highly doubt .

Amp - i'm not at all familiar with amps .. so i will go with what you suggest ... just as long as all the components compliment each other .. and produce a great sound

my price range on everything .. i'd like it to be below $ 500 ... but i highly doubt thats possible... so definatly under a grand is what i'm looking at .. as low costing as possible but with good quality .

How do tweets work? Do you have to get holes in your door or something to get them put in? Also, can you have them if you have back speakers?
When I was getting rear speakers a lot of people told me to just go for a good front component setup, but why can't you do that with rear speakers?
Also, are tweets expensive, and do they really make much of a difference?
Thanks!

Hey guys... well i just installed the beginning of my stereo
i went with focal access 2 ways for my fronts
6.5 woofer, 1 inch tweeter.. but i see u want to spend under a grand.. cuz my front speakers and the amp running them alone over that...

but i have a solution to all problems

Speakers:
go with like an Infinity reference component set (REF605CS)
and if thats out of range or even plan like Sony 6.5 (XSF1621)
with dome tweeters (a better tweeter would be suggest, cuz u will get mid bass from the 6.5, but doesnt have to be mint, cuz a sub will help it.., tweet for treble..

Deck:
Just try and get a deck w/ 3 rca outputs, front, rear, sub...
the more u spend the better...

Amp and Sub combo...
want a little bump but nice sound...
Kaption SPL 12' with a decent amp, a buddy of my has a sony which runs it really nice...

sub box - one word "MDF"

But save some cash u can transfer almost anything now in days...
Focal Fronts
Image Dynamic for SPL = IDQ BASS = MAX
A fosgate 400a4 to runs fronts
AudioBahn or Zapco for Subs...

be smart

Get high end stuff so you don't have to buy car audio again. Buy something you will be satisfied with 2 years down the road.

MY suggestion for you would be

-Pioneer 5500mp
-CDT classic 6.5 Braxials or component set
-A nice used 12" sub for around $200(sealed)
-A good 4 channel amp (run fronts off 2 channels and bridge the other for the sub

dont forget you will need all the stuff to hook it up in the car and MDF for the box etc.

DJTre - Tweets are there to play the really high notes and voices in music. Usually in the 5000-20000hz range. Alot of people suggest not running rear speakers because it will draw your music to the back of the car and not sound right. You can run tweets with rear speakers if you want it wont affect it much. Tweets usually come with a mid-range/midbass driver such as a 6.5" driver.

Umm my opinion: take it with a grain of salt

Deck: What do you want? You want something with alot of bells or whistles that you can impress your friends with or take to a show and leave playing and AWW the onlookers with all the fancy doo dads your deck does? Or want a basic unit that has your typical bass, treble controls, plays cds and has all the basic functions you use day in day out.

Front speakers:

Look past the name brand and have a listen. There is such a wide variety of different brands out there to choose from, and alot of them are the same (same basket, same type of material for the different components in the speaker) only diff is the NAME BRAND and the color

Also check out some online compnays that are not into the flash and rather spend there money into design and quality construction rather than flash and a pricey name.

Youd be surprised how good some of them sound, but look like garbage compared to some dollar names out there.

Amps:

Get more than you need:

Plan down the road, what do you want to run and do you think you will need more power?

There are so many good name brands out there, look into RMS power they put out and also a good crossover and subsonic filter for subs.

THD is also another thing to watch out but most fall within such a small range you dont really have to look at this spec.

Subs: Get something that has been tested and has some nice xmax. The new Adire Audio 10" from reviews seems like a monster, its built to take abuse and comes in a tiny 10" application, enough for daily driver and then some.

Go have a listen in the stores and see what diff kinds of subs you can listen to and see what tickles your fancy.

Remember, box type and location plays a big role too, what sounds good in the demo room may sound like garbage in your car and vince versa.

my 2 cents
