DIY garage door opener mod...

Or........... you can buy an add on controller to control the garage opener. If you have an unused channel on your alarm remote, then you can program this channel to control the controller, which in turn will open and close the garage door.
DEI makes one, and so does a bunch of other companies. I installed one about 5 years ago for my uncles garge door. He uses channel 3 of his remote (it was supposed to be used for something like power trunk popper, but he didn't have a power truck, and didn't want one installed, so we used that unused channel).
The really cool thing, is that the range of the car alarm remote/garage door controller, is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay father than the regular ones you get with a garage door motor kit. This allows you to open the door from a grteater distance, so you don't have to wait for the door to fully open before you drive in, because it will be already wide open by the time you get there.

The one I installed for my uncle, kinda looks like this one. (it goes inside the garage near the garage door motor)
The nice thing of doing it this way, is if the car is ever broken into, the remote for the garage door is on his keychain. That way the thief wouldn't be able to open the garage door, even if they knew where my uncle lived.
The remote and controller also have code hopping, and anti scan, so it's almost impossible for someone to come along and "scan" the code to open the garage door.
The kit cost around $70, around 5 years ago. If you needed a second remote, or a remote becase you don't have an alarm remote in the first place, then you could get one for around $30 more. (all Canadian prices)
