Although nothing in car audio is really high end, harman kardon make some good speakers as do Altec Lansing.
For the ultimate, try

Try the boston acoustic rally series. I have them in my 92 hatch. They provide a wide and high stage. I also have a pair of alpine type r's and I feel the boston's work better in the civic.

I've had Boston Accoustic's but found them to tingy for the small intererior of a Civic. I'm currently using JL's VR series and I'm happy with them. I think the next one's I try would prob. be Fusion's. I don't like Alpine product's, find them to be only mediocer. MY opinion.

buy larger ones
whatever you buy, get them in a larger size.
I put 6 and a half inch speakers in the doors, and pulled out the old factory 5 1/4 sony's. The 6 1/2 will fit in 92-95 civics.
I'm using Lanzar's and there was a noticeable improvement. I'm happy.

Just go to XS CARGO. I bought their cheap 6 1/2" 3 ways ($19.99) last spring. They sound better than the stock ones. Still haven't blown them.......been about a year now. I used those because I sold my MB Quart 6 1/2" comp. set. (The MB's were awsome sounding.....i miss them)

Price would be the deciding factor in your choice? The type r's or bostons would be good for the low-medium range. Focals are great, but really need to be in kickpanels (such as q-forms) to get your monies worth. The xtant components are amazing (made by morel) and worth every penny in any location. MBQs are amazing in factory locations but lack bass.
The pair I plan to run are Lotus (by seas) Reference set. I currently have a pair in the jetta which I will likely move to the hatch. They are 7" magnesium driver with tweets crossed over at 1700Hz. The bass output coming out of these drivers is incredible. I plan on removing my kaption pro 10's and running the 7" into the sub range. during tuning of the jetta's system the sub amp shut off and we didn't even notice. These speakers are my answer to removing the weight of the subs.

You guy may be correct. This week end I heard a pair of utopia's in the doors and a-pillars of a friends car and the sound was pretty good (good enough to come first at Audio Thunder this weekend). There was significant tuning with a 2-channel 1/3 octave eq though. The only problem with them is the price. Not only the price of them, but the price of also adding an amplifier and eq to do them justice. Not many people can justify a few thousand dollars on their front stage. For around $300 the Type R's and Boston's are nice.
Also, if you have an exhaust on your car, putting any speaker greater than $300 is rediculous. You'll never hear any of the details that a higher end speaker will produce. I discovered that the expensive way and ended up spending $700 to have a six-month old $1000 custom stainless cat-back removed and a new factory cat-back exhaust put on and another $2000 in deadening and sound proofing to enjoy the clarity at 120 on the highway.
If your goal is good and cheap, try clarion.
