power door lock conversion

thats sounds good now on a scale of 1 to 10 1 being you could get a 6 year old to do it and ten being I'd have better luck towing the titanic out of the ocean with my civic where would you rate this job?

I just did it myself :)
I just did it myself
I installed a remote starter/alarm as well as power locks into my 92 civic hatch. It had manual locks before.
You gotta get power locks, they come in a set for about $60 CDN for two doors (including transmitter). If you already have an alarm, then you can get this for less, since you dont need another transmitter... the locks can work EASILY off your alarm.
I've installed this in two other civics already myself. A friends 1992, my bro's 1995 and just now, my 1992 If you want, I could give you some advice on this. I wish I took picks for you all
Basically, take off your door skins, and mount the actors with screws... sounds easy buy it takes a while...
A little bit of cutting and hammering is needed too. Then, the door skin goes back on and no-one sees the mess underneath.
I've never used my key since

Break ins prevented
Break ins prevented...
well, if you break the plastic tabs from the inside, the only way to unlock the doors is electronically. Therefore, the theif has to crawl IN and OUT through the window.

ok I don't think I was clear on my question about the actuators .. say a thief gets into my car ... alram goes off and I get paged and say I activate the door locks with the theif inside the car would they be able to hold the thief in while I call the cops?

He'll obviously break your window when he realized he's trapped, or if he's smart, just unlock the trunk and crawl out. Other than that, it's downright dangerous for you or your friends/family, say you crash w. 4 ppl in the car, you are knocked out cold, and no one else knows how to get out of the car, and the car is leaking gas from the crash and is about to burst into flames. Far fetched, but accidents are accidents since they are UNEXPECTED. Best you can do is get some sheetmetal and make a cover for the rods so that the Slim Jim won't work. But then again forget ever getting your keys out if you happen to lock them in...the CAA guy won't be able to hook you up. A good alarm alone is a deterrant for 90% of thieves out there, the other 10% will get your car no matter what. If they want in, they'll just pop your handle right off and work the rods with a pair of pliers. You can't keep a thief out!

totally right
Your totally right about making the doors electronically lock/unlock only. But since I myself only drive my car, its alright. Plus I put a huge unlock button in my car too, far safety. As far as an accident goes where the car loses power, then I'd be stuck climbing out a window or taking my key out of the ignition, opening the window, and unlocking the door from the outside with my hand ...
All I'm saying is that most 92-95 civic break ins I've seen happen cause the theif pryed the window back and unlocked the door from the inside. That can't happen now. Also, some just bust the window... well, now they'll have to climb in over the broken sticky glass too... it attracts attention.
Last time they stole $14 in toonies from my ashtray. They damaged my dash trying to pull my Eclipse deck... that cost me over $50 in parts alone to fix... losers

My car was slim jimmed open. Locking a thief in will only cause more damage as he tries to escape. I also think he may do a civil law suit. (Don't ask how...) As for prying the window back, not much you can do there...like I said, they want it, they get it. You may remove the inside poppers (disconnect the rods that go to the manual locking mech) and they will never be able to unlock it by slipping a wire past the window.

So BBarbulo, I should disconnect the rods for the inside locks, and cover the rods for the outside locks with sheet metal.... will I still be able to roll down my windows (I've never looked inside a door don't know where everything is.) anyways thanks for the help.... also will I be able to have the doors use power locks to lock and unlock the door if I've disconnected the rod for the inside lock?

Note that disconnecting the inside lock will prevent your car from passing a safety, cause of the crash and burn reasons, the gov't mandates it that ppl must be able to unlock the doors from the inside. I guess they value human life more than cars getting stolen. Yes, there is lots of room inside the door. There are four rods for the latch... from the inside a lock/latch combo, and from the outside the key/handle combo. You will remove the inside lock rod and replace that with the power popper, so the thief can yank on the inside lock all he wants, it's disconnected. So you can still open it with the key or the remote. If you do it smart, using a little bit of sheetmetal to make like a shield around the latch area, and the thief won't be able to hook the slim jim to anything. He can still pry at the handle and break it, gaining access that way. Up to you how much work you wanna do. What I will do is take out the poppers (things sticking out of the side of the inside door - thing that goes up and down when you work the locks) and instead of the hole being open, I'm gonna place pimp-*** blue flashing LED in the hole to make it all smooth. And I'm replacing my front handles with a pair of rear lockless handless from an EX. So no locks anywhere...plus I get to have factory VSM handles instead of my black ones. That's if I get around to it this summer.

bbarbulo good idea
bbarbulo good ideas...seriously, that's really clever. I think I might get lockless door handles one day
The LED's would look good. Try Active Surplus (toronto)... they have a wide selection of cheap led's.
