Replacing Horn

I need to replace the horn in my 89 civic and would like to know how should i go about doing it. There is already a horn in it, but it does not work. So how would i get it connected to the steering wheel? Will i be going to a junk yard? or is at as simple as hookin up 2 wires?

its usually 2 wire, but could be 1 if its a 12v trigger

depends on the system, whether it is 12v trigger, or ground for the contact.

On my 94 civic it was ground, so hot (12v) was always going to the horn, and when you push the steering wheel it completed the ground for the horn.

See how many wires yours is, and wire accordingly, very easy swap.

you should have wires already there...if your replacing a dead horn are you not?

If its just an OEM horn your replacing, you just reuse the existing wires, unless the contact is bad in the steering wheel

Im not 2 sure... THere is a horn under the hood, and the horn does not work from pressing down the steering wheel... So im guessing that there are no wires, but im not quite sure.

has the horn ever worked? If it has, its the horn. If you have an OEM steering wheel and have never put on another wheel, there is wires there.

Okay, so bascially, you are telling me, it is the actual horn underneath the hood that is not working, correct?

It could most likely be. You have a couple of scenerios.

1.) Horn is dafunked
2.) Contact is coroded (not making contact) or broken somehow
3.) Fuse is blown

easiest way is to get a 12V bulb if you dont have a multimeter, and replace it where the horn went and see if it lights up when you press the wheel. This will eliminate any need to rip apart the steering wheel if it is functioning just fine.

Horns die, mine did, and I replaced it with an air horn a few years ago.

yeh, even walmart has them for cheap, like $9 or so.

Depending on how your current horn is wire, you may need to do a small mod for it to work proper.

If your current horn is negative trigger, replacing it with some aftermarket horns that have the body of the horn grounded, will mean if you mount it to the car, it will be on constantly, so you have 2 options.

Add in a cheap auto relay to control the horn, or mount the horn on a piece of plastic or rubber, then mount the rubber to the body to isolate it from the cars ground, and then the horn will only go on when you trigger the steering wheel ground path.

Yeah I think i was lookin at an alarm. So i need to take off my front bumper 2 see my horn, and it is most likely a connection problem, or the horn is dead. Matt u know me, im a dunce when it comes to cars. Just trying to learn and do it myself u know.

the horn is most likely dead or a connection problem at the steering wheel (bad clock spring) or a corroded connection at the horn...and yea, the horn is behind the bumper
