Sports mode will try to freeze the action by opening your aperture and upping the shutter speed.

If you understand how your dslr works, you'll never need anything other than M, TV and AV.

if i get stuck i will put the dial from M to the suitable preset, just to see the aperture and shutter speed its using to get me in the ball park. then i adjust to get the result i want...cheating? maybe, but i never stick with what the preset has...i am just using the resources available to me.

Neither have I. That's why I was asking.

I don't think it's cheating... You can't know every combo for every situation!
Use your built in meter to see if you're well exposed, if not, take a quick peek!

True. It usually takes me like a dozen shots to get it to where I want to be. It's trial and error.

Cropped pic of the coin.

Well its about $400 right now. Its not a fortune, but it cost a lot less to buy it new back in 1998. The stamped coin value on the back of the coin says "15 dollars".

That's pretty good investment. Now go sell it and buy some gas for the Civic. Lol.
