if that $5 grand includes the car, engine, suspension, drivetrain, safety equipment, then you don't have a lot of choice. the fact your other engine post also says a budget of $5K makes me think you have $5K for the entire project. this won't get you very far. figure you gotta pay at least $2-3K for a relatively rust free shell (if you build a rustbucket it's just a waste of time and money), that only means you have money for $1000 for tires and some used rims, $800 to freshen up the brakes (master cyl, lines, pads, rebuilt calipers, rotors, shoes, and drums) $1000 for susp (shocks, springs, bushings, tie rods, ball joints upper and lower, maybe used sway bar), you'll likely need a few hudred bucks for axles and a new clutch... and you're out of money. That means stock engine race car... which means another $500 for timing belt, water pump, and full tune up incl ignition stuff, perhaps an O2 sensor, new rad and hoses.
Otherwise you can buy a $800 peice of crap civic, buy a $1500 B16 swap, another $500 for mounts, and spend the rest on suspension... but then who knows when the engine is gonna blow up or fall apart from rust?
Oh yeah, and a civic that old, all the hard lines and the fuel tank will prolly be pretty rusted, so you may have to redo all the hard brake lines and tank...
if I had $5K to build a race car, I'd buy someone elses swapped hatch, then start fixing all the things they did wrong.
