What type or shocks (strut) absorbers should I get?

Hey there,

I made a thread a while ago about my suspension for my 2000 4dr civic. not so much for racing but i do put my foot down every once and a while. just wondering if TOKICO shocks would be good for a comfortable ride or would they be too stiff.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...092611976&rd=1

please take a look and let me know

well, i just went through this hole process. you get what you pay for. those are great shocks but as noted what springs are you thinking. i just ended up with the shunk2 pro-s coilovers on my 93 eg. i love them. good compromise between sport and street.
my advise, do some reading...... i want to track my car couple of time a yr, street the rest. my cousin has the illuminas w/Tokico Red Springs. more money but adjustable ride. what are you after??

Well to tell you the truth I went to Crappy Tire today and found out my fronts springs would cost 180 and rear 220... i was hoping the ones ive got on the civic now would suffice (which are stock), if you guys think otherwise please let me know

Those Tokico HP shocks you have linked are pretty much OEM replacement shocks. They are good shocks, but get a bad reputation sometimes because people overspring them or lower the car beyond the shocks effective working range. Tokico is a very reputable brand though, with a good warranty.

If you are simply looking to use your OEM springs then these would be a great match. Keep in mind they will feel "firmer" then your OEM shocks, but I wouldn't worry about it.

I am also quite certain that your springs DO NOT need to be changed, unless they are by some odd reason rotted out or cracked.. However, if you feel that you would prefer to change your springs for something newer while the old spring are going to be out anyways you do have some aftermarket options.

The cheapest solution would probably be the Tein H-tech. It only offers a very mild drop, and an ever so slightly stiffer spring rate. At $200-$250 for all four springs, its going to be much less then CT is charging you for OEM springs.

Hope this helps.

Oh, I forgot to mention another spring. The H&R OE Sport. It offers even less of a drop, I dont recall the spring rates but they will be soft, quite possibly softer then the H-tech. They will probably be $50-100 more though.

Just throwing it out there.

thanks very much for the advice i appreciate it alot, one question though... when you say firmer, do you mean in the sense that I'll be feeling more bumps and they'll be rougher... or my steering will be a bit firmer

I think the tokico HP line is CRAP. 2join just suggested them with tein Htech springs. That is the exact set up I was running I blew 2 struts from nothing major just started as oil leaks and eventually they were flat. To get Tokico to replace them was such a pain it was not even worth it. I called the company and got nothing but run around responses. I would never deal with that company again. If I ever talked to customers that way at work I'd be in a lot of $hit.
You want a comfortable ride stay stock... you want go a bit lower stay away from tokico hp and probably the others due to their poor customer service skills. I would probably go with Koni or true full way adjustable coilovers.

KYB AGX, Tokico Illumina, or Koni Red would be my choices in no particular order (budget would decide). As for springs, you want OE type ride, why not stock Type R springs, or even SIR... minimally stiffer, no noticable drop. but if you are ok with your current ride height and quality, then don't change the springs. I'm also a huge fan of H&R springs... Tein too, but mostly H&R. Lots of people are getting out of the modding game, you should be able to get some used springs real cheap ($100-$150 for the set), or $40-60 for SiR springs, maybe $80-100 for Integra or Civic Type R springs.

AWESOME...finally the reds get some respect. Theyre fully rebuildable just like the yellows. They are rebound adjustable, and on civics and integras -2002 you can remove the suspension to adjust them without having to worry about an alignment each time, and they can handle 70% of what the yellows can, so upwards of 400lbs.

Theyre are high quality and affordable. Most people dont need to adjust their shocks on the fly, and even less know how to do it properly.
