Curious: Pedestrian Crossing X w/ lights?
Hey, you guys know those pedestrian crossings on roads that are just an X over the road with the flashing yellow lights. K so I was driving down this street (Dupont), and some guy stopped in front of one of these things (there was a street there so he could turn left), the lights on the pedestrian crossing were not flashing. I changed lanes and went around the guy. Some lady was in the intersection crossing b/c she went against the crossing light and got stuck in the middle of the road, that's why the guy stopped in the middle of the street (not turning left like I had assumed). I couldn't see the woman b/c his car was blocking my view; besides I was shoulder checking to change lanes already.
So did I technically do anything wrong? I know pedestrians have right of way even if they're suicidal, but I can't think of any laws I may have broken. I was kinda pissed cuz it ruined my day... I'm a hella careful driver and seeing such a clusterf**k that could have caused me to hit someone kinda irked me. I didn't get a ticket or didn't hit anyone, just made me wonder what my duties are to idiots on the road.

You should have a license to walk the streets in high density areas. lol
That was always puzzled me. In Toronto they have many of these cross walks, whereas, outside of Toronto there are nothing but a White sign stated "Perdestrian X"
Maybe she was drunk or cracked out? Too lazy or ignorant to press the button?

The overhead flashing lights at some pedestrian crossings are just an add-on. There is no requirement for a crossing to havethose lights, or for a pedestrian to activate those lights if they exist prior to crossing, and the absence of flashing lights does not relieve approaching drivers of the responsibility to yield to either pedestrians signalling their intention to cross, or to pedestrians already in the midst of crossing.
The HTA puts almost all of the onus on drivers, and most especially on drivers coming up to pass cars other cars stopped at or even still moving but approaching the crosswalk. In other words, the OP could have been charged for failing to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk.
Section 140 of the HTA states:
Where vehicle stopped at pedestrian crossover
(2) When a vehicle or street car is stopped at a pedestrian crossover, the driver of any other vehicle or street car overtaking the stopped vehicle or street car shall bring the vehicle or street car to a full stop before entering the crossover and shall yield the right of way to a pedestrian or a person in a wheelchair,
(a) who is within the crossover upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle or street car is stopped; or
(b) who is within the crossover and is approaching the half of the roadway from the other half of the roadway so closely to the vehicle or street car that he or she is in danger if the vehicle or street car were to proceed. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 140 (2).
Passing moving vehicles within 30 metres of pedestrian crossover
(3) When a vehicle or street car is approaching a pedestrian crossover and is within 30 metres thereof, the driver of any other vehicle or street car approaching from the rear shall not allow the front extremity of his or her vehicle or streetcar to pass beyond the front extremity of the other vehicle or street car. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 140 (3).

Speaking of the pedestrian crossings with the yellow flashing lights ... I haven't seen one of those in ages. Here in Mississauga I don't think there is one, and in Etobicoke, where I used to see them before, they have been removed and replaced by traffic lights. I wonder why.

Yup, you don't ever want to run down a pedestrian at a crosswalk. God help you, they'll run you up on a cross and crucify you all the way to hell.

i actually witnessed an old lady and her husband get SMOKED at a crosswalk with no lights.
it was around 8:00-9:00 and it was getting dark out. An old lady and her husband (in a wheelchair), old lady was actually holding an umbrella and pushing the man in the wheelchair.
They were galloping across the street from starbucks and an older white chevy truck (them beefy ones) quite literally SMOKED them. The wheelchair was in pieces all over the streets, ladies umbrella went flying! The man died instantly, women was still alive and asked how her husband was, when the paramedics told her, she passed away shortly after as well.
Awful awful scene, wouldn't like to ever witness that again.
